About Us: This organization, centered in the Hudson Valley area, was founded upon a desire to bring together vegans and those who are curious about veganism. We combine Social Events and Social Action by enjoying delicious, healthful vegan food and encouraging others to do the same. As more people choose vegan food, fewer farmed animals will be raised. You do not have to be vegan to attend our events - just eat like one when you are with us. We are a supportive community interested learning, exchanging ideas, and informing others. If you would like to learn more about us, or attend an event, feel free to visit us on Meetup or send us an email.
Our History: In 1996, Rae Schlecht of Kingston, NY, who was an avid long-distance bicycle rider, learned about carbohydrate loading as the best way to prepare for a race. "Why not eat that way all the time?" she wondered. Soon after, she founded the Mid-Hudson Vegetarian Society, a 501c3 non profit organization. Rae worked hard to help us obtain our tax exempt status. She recruited hard working volunteers, and our organization grew rapidly as she planned events and tabled at numerous health fairs and community days year after year. We remember Rae with love and gratitude for all the hard work she did for us and for the vegan movement.
In 2002, Roberta Schiff of Rhinebeck, NY took over as President of the Mid-Hudson Vegetarian Society continuing the work and vision Rae started in 1996. Roberta organizes a variety of monthly events - always offering delicious food, interesting conversation, community, exchange of ideas, laughter and fun. Also, under Roberta's leadership, our website is now being updated and maintained. Information about our events can be found on Meetup, or by contacting Roberta directly via email. We have also implemented a number of ways for attendees to pay for events and for anyone to make tax deductible donations to our organization. To honor our true mission, we have come to call ourselves the Hudson Valley Vegans, and we welcome you to join us at our monthly events and become part of our community!
Environmental Perspective: We recognize the environmental impact caused by animal agriculture - including its contribution to global warming and world hunger. Exploring and presenting the many benefits of a plant-based diet is central to our focus and outreach.
